SENCON Student Conference “Empowering the voters of tomorrow”

“I would also like to raise one final point before the beginning of the Conference. Democracy cannot be described accurately as such, if it does not include in its elected representatives all groups of society or, if not all citizens have access to elections. It is unfortunate, that even today’s world of progress, innovation and development, we still see great disparity in the representation of women, LGBTQI+ individuals, disabled persons and ethnic minorities in institutions, to mention only some of the underrepresented groups. In this respect, I would like encourage all of you today, regardless of gender, origin, or any other status, to seize the opportunity to be active in civil affairs and political life. We must reach substantive equality and lay the foundations of a democratic society where all citizens truly have a voice”

It was an honour to attend todays SENCON Student Conference “Empowering the voters of tomorrow” organised by The Senior School Nicosia, and to deliver the welcome speech on behalf of the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou.

So refreshing to be surrounded by young people full of enthusiasm and passion!
